breathing in & out

Daily life of a contemporary human being is saturated with surplus stuffs and the flood of images, which are reproduced by mass media. The site of natural landscape has been already replaced by the spectacle of a gorgeous and enormous space of consumption which value consumption of goods the most highly. Moreover, the identity of a contemporary human being is defined by his or her pattern of consumption and the stuff he or she owns. Consumption not only functions as a simple economic behavior but works as a socio-cultural index. The stuffs which once had belonged to someone and had been used by someone are now being thrown away easily in proportion to the rate of consumption which is getting ever faster and faster.

The exhibition, <breathing in & out>, consists of works which present various artists' interpretations of and approaches to stuffs and nature which are exhausted and discarded and small forgotten everyday life. Bum-soo Kim, Mi-hyung Kim, Jin-kee Choi, and Jung-lim Han, Young-in Hong speak in simple and controlled language without using an exaggerated rhetoric. They depend on the sense of analog hand which requires patience and time in order to represent their objects. If we compare their work to writing, we would say that they stick to handwriting over digital keyboarding, which aims at superficial lightness and fast speed.

Like Vilem Flusser, who says "we need to look into our hands to know how we think," these artists think with their hands that produce works. Hands are sensory organs essential to artistic creation like eyes and tools that help the formation of concepts and extension of recognition. Going through the process of cutting, putting together, and retouching materials with hands, artists compose their thoughts to complete their works. Life sinks into the completed works that retain the warmth of the hand, and they also contain the breathing in and out of an organism. In his essay <The Poetics of space>, the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard says that different words referring to 'the spirit' in almost all languages are varied forms of 'breathing' and onomatopoeia of 'breathing'. The artists who believe in the power of honest hands capture the spirit of breathing "which inhales and exhales air" through their artistic imagination and handicraft, discover another unexpected world contained in everyday stuffs, and draw out the sensitivity of poetic thinking.

Dry leaves of a platanus tree is the main material used by Mi-hyung Kim, who has pursued the series titled 'Breathing'. While slowly passing the time for being dried, leaves change color and take a slightly distorted natural shape. We feel the finger-marked traces of past life as we see people who are aging beautifully. By leaving an opening for breathing on each leaf, the artist secretly leaves the small door open so that each leaf can communicate with the outside. The arrangement of numerous leaves creates a three-dimensional movement, from which a space is unrolled. The space becomes the place in which a feeble organism of nature breathes and reflects the echo of a secret drama. Breathing in and out of leaves faintly shake the flow of air, and this poetic images of nature touch the deep inside before shaking the surface.

Bum-soo Kim has consistently worked on the theme of "Hidden Emotion" behind sensuous colors and dynamic forms. He uses the narrative of movies as a unit of segmentation in his densely and elaborately composed geometric structure. He cuts the movie reel which was discarded after screening at the theaters into frames, and rearranges them. Through this process, the artist becomes a movie director, who directs and edits his own microcosm. In this micro-world, reality meets fiction, and the cold abstract meets the hot concreteness. It is a dual world in which the flow of continuously unfolding time coexists with the closed space as a concluded form. His installation, which reminds us of the stained glass in a church, provides a space full of the spectrum of transparent light in darkness, and leads us to meditation and contemplation. This is also a dual world of an ambiguous dimension in which light and shadow as well as the sacred and the secular coexist.

The work of Jin-kee Choi in which we find cheerful rebellion of everyday stuffs commands a witty, light-hearted visual language, while keeping a critical eye toward the theme. The images emerging like specters on the surface of objets, which are thoughtlessly used and thrown away such as toothpaste, cell phones, glasses, and wrapping materials, lead us to the surrealistic world of magic. The solemn Buddha smiling in the toothpaste or the polar bear roaming in the corner of styrofoam used for wrapping expresses the dream of life that was crouched within the stuff and began to reveal itself. The visual humor of the objet itself stimulates the universal imagination which has existed within us but was never unfolded. On the other hand, the glasses in which a sharp pin pokes the eyes or the cell phone with its mouth open sinisterly revealing the angry teeth of thumbtacks opens another world of truth combined with black humor for us. With the chilling charm of reversal just like Man Ray's nailed iron with a row of nails, 'Cadeau', these works reveal the sarcastic criticism which became even sharper after his stay in New York.

Jung-lim Han restructures everyday objets which reflect our life. She applies used coffee filters to her work <Humble Blossom>. The refined coffee color that reveals delicate hues depending on the strength and thickness of coffee and the cursive line around the filter create unexpected beauty. As the title suggests, the coffee filter comes into flower, stimulating our tactile experience mediated through the gaze. As black, transparent coffee is soaked into the paper filter, a hue as natural and comfortable as our breathing in and out is created. When the breathing of a delicate color resisting to be captured in verbal expressions reveals itself, we find the unintended naturalness and the condensed time of waiting in it.

Flower drawing series by Young-in Hong first started in India in 2003. The works to be exhibited for this show were produced in London, England, where the artist currently resides. She chose the flower, a typical subject matter of traditional still life painting, and finished it in her unique embroidery work. However, unlike ordinary flowers of a still life painting, in which flowers are in full bloom and boast of their bright colors and strong fragrance, Hong Young-In's flower drawings record the process of flowers blooming and wilting. Dried, thinly-spaced twigs and wilting petals embroidered in black thread hint at something disappearing as well as its melancholic beauty. The artist captures the desperate moment of vanishing life with her sewing. Cloth and thread are not a tool of description but a tool of writing to her, and she keeps a calm and controlled viewpoint of the artist throughout the process of recording. Her practice of specifying the place she bought the flowers and the price can be understood in the same context. (For example, "Waterloo Station, London, £5) We are reminded of the fact that the units of denomination with which we purchase the invariable value of natural beauty vary in each city. Seemingly employing the private language of delicate sensibility, her flower drawing series proves that she still holds the string of socio-economic context as shown in her previous public projects like <Open Theater>.

Mi-hyung Kim

Leaves are falling down, giving up their fresh green color. Now the comfortable, therefore, imposing dance begins. They softly and softly fall to the ground, calling the wind. Their color already took after that of the soil. Time takes away whatsoever remaining moisture, but leaves willingly give up all they have, and turn into the soil silently.

On a summer day when I was strolling around the house, I happened to see worm-eaten bean leaves among fresh ones. Some holes were laughing, and some were crying. There were other holes wearing an expression I couldn't name. Undamaged leaves without a hole didn't look beautiful. They had no expression of feelings at all like joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure. There was I who couldn't indifferently pass over the hole that was randomly bored. Thus my work of boring holes on leaves began.I make a space by rolling up a leaf. A young cricket or spider hides in it. It seems a cozy resting place.

I make more holes as if I were making a window. It will be pleasant to see the scene outside, won't it? I look at the hole from the outside and imagine the inside of the small space made of a leaf. There seems to be something inside. The rolled-up leaf exactly resembles a human being. It seems to stretch its neck to talk to the person next to it. I see myriads of veins on it like human blood vessels.

A worm is wriggling and nibbling away the leaves. There is a minute hole which recorded the worm's life.

A variety of societies and cultures coexist in my work. The stories frozen in the frame of 35, 16, or 8 mm celluloid attempt to tell a story in its own way within one structure. . . In the work for exhibition, stories of each celluloid are shown in patterns, which take a complicated form of a geometric figure, or Mandala lattice. I want to introduce to the viewers a new sensuous experience achieved from cultural, religious, and social exchanges. It will be delivered in the enclosed space along with the effects of lighting through the shape of windows and doors which symbolize communication.

Jin-kee Choi

Floating thoughts in my head divide into things good for real life and non-helpful. Most of these usable things are developmental and reasonable, because I’m an educated person, but still there are fragments of trivial images exist meaninglessly. Sometimes it’s out of ethic or too guff although they have some recognizable figures. Where have they come from? It seems like coming from past beautiful memories, unsatisfied needs from societies now, or physical desire for the future. Nothing has clear origins but they frequently make me fun.

Humble blossom

The remnants of the time

I keep an eye on the wastes, or the stuffs that are used and then thrown away. As a token of affection toward them, I pick one up and put time and labor to transform it into a stuff that has a different order. Then the stuff is born again as a thing that can be shared with the viewers through the five senses. These regenerated stuffs are not discarded wastes any longer but new words whose lives are extended.

Humble blossom
The coffee filter that is turned out everyday has layers. Each different layer is combined naturally with other layers to create a drawing in itself.

The remnants of the time
The worm-beaten leaves are overlapped with the coffee consumed by humans. They calmly draw the tracks left by nature in an inartificial shape.

This series of drawings are an ongoing project, which began in New Delhi, India, 2003. The artist made drawings of flowers using a sewing machine, drawing directly from life. By recording the price of flower, the time and place in which she bought the flowers, this piece will become a linear trace of where the artist visited and how much it was spent to buy a bunch of flowers.

F
lower Drawing also questions the shifting category of the concept of beauty, which has been commodified and standardized by consumer society.
