Soyoung Chung

Forest+Light
Light Garden, Chung Soyoung

Soyoung Chung, working on various medium of art, mainly installations that attempt to invert existing notions of space, constantly features new virtual spaces in which past and present fuse together. Using countless stories that bloom and disappear in objects that are deconstructed and reorganized or buildings built and torn down, her works originate from her curiosity about and observation of nature, urban sceneries and the physical phenomena that take place within such spaces. It can be seen as a psychological and philosophical approach to the physical force of nature, transformation, friction, crystallization, gravity and dissolution. She captures the third kind of space between nature and the artificial that does not exist in reality through her spatial experiments that cross over fields such as science, geography, architecture, and visual art.

  Gowoon Park opened its gates in 2012. Situated opposed to Sanglim and Yunji Park, Gowoon park faces the two older parks, as if one is looking into a different time zone. Chung Soyoung actively introduces the element of light and creates, within the contrast between the parks, all kinds of sculptures that reproduce natural elements such as pine cones, tree branches, stars and the sky. Soyoung’s sculptures are titled: Light Drop, Star Bench, Sky Kaleidoscope and Bell Tree. With these additions, Gowoon Park is reborn into a new kind of forest.

<Light Garden>

Sky Kaleidoscope :
A cylinder structure that allows one to look at the sky through a hole, it is similar to a telescope that one plays with during childhood.

Star Bench :
In the form of stars and breakwater, viewers can play on it or rest on it like a bench.

Light Drops :
Pine cones, easily found in the woods, are designed into a graphic structure whose glittering surface reflects light, allowing people to look into it like a mirror.

Bell Tree :
A Sculpture with the appearance of entangled tree branches; it moves around by itself as the tree gently sways in the wind and, through the movement, becomes a part of nature.
