건우주택

<건우주택>은 내가 현재 살고 있는 다세대 주택의 이름이다. 적벽색 벽돌로 지어진 <건우주택>은80년대 후반에 지어진 서울에서는 구식 빌라에 속한다. 이 집을 찾기까지 부동산 아주머니와 여러 집을 보러 다니며 급변하는 신축 빌라의 건축 양식에 대해 이야기를 나누던 중 매끈한 대리석 외관의 신축 빌라들 사이에 오래된 주택에서만 볼 수 있는 시간의 흔적은 나에게 꽤나 매력적이었다. 사람과 시간이 축적된 건물 곳곳의 흔적을 관찰하고 그 중 서체와 무늬들을 수집하여, 겹쳐진 레이어들로 재구성하였다.

'Gun-wou jutak’ is the name of townhouse where I live. This redbrick building was built in the late 80’s, which is quiet old for Korean standard. The realtor, at first, did not understand my choice of this flat as my home, explaining the changes in house trend over the decades and stressing the fact that the trend tend to change in every 10 years. In 90th, the house trend shifted from redbrick to marble façade ones; however, this specific redbrick townhouse gave me a strong impression because of the many traces of the past. I observed the marks in & out of the building which probably has been made and accumulated over the years by people who lived in here. I specifically collected the old-fashioned vernacular typefaces and small patterns from the traces and arranged them onto different layers.
