The Care of the Self : Journals and Letters

Program 03. Computation – Invention, not Innovation

Panel : Yehwan Song(Web Designer), Bohyun Jung(Software Engineer)

Moderator : Taeyoon Choi

This online panel with web designer Yehwan Song and software engineer Bohyun Jung, moderated by Taeyoon Choi, will explore the sense of self in the context of computation. As a public program of the exhibition 'The Care of the Self: Journals and Letters' at factory2 in Seoul, South Korea, the panelists will present their practice and engage in conversation about the following questions. The online panel will be in Korean for remote viewing through zoom.

Taeyoon's Question to the Panels

1. How can we distinguish between innovation (linear progression and perpetual growth) and invention (something more difficult to visualize, but intrinsic to the true transformation of science. Perhaps a recursive form)? Why are we so uncomfortable with terms like the “Fourth Industrial Revolution(as defined by Klaus Schwab of the World Economic Forum)?” What are the technocratic intentions behind 'periodization' of technology with a certain time and place?

2. How can we distinguish between computation and technology? Computation is a system of arithmetic and logical operations, which are often, but not always, written in code. People often conflate computation with technological products, which leads to a dangerous misunderstanding of both. Can we discuss the differences between computation, science, and technology? Can we challenge technologies that claim to make things 'easier'? Can we revisit our relationship to math, physics, and the fundamentals of systems to unlearn capitalist technology? Can we seek for more fundamental appreciation of computation - such as the magical world of numbers?

3. Yehwan. You challenge the tenets of conventional web design and user experience that approach humans as users, quantified data to be controlled. What are the poetics and politics of anti-user friendly experiences? For example, your practice is about making things with apparent seams, visualizing and materializing the rough edges around the web technology. What is your obsession with the pixels and grids, and what gets you excited about them?

4. Bohyun. You work for a tech giant as a developer on Artificial Intelligence projects. However, you have expressed concerns about misunderstanding and misuse of the term Artificial Intelligence. Can you help me understand what you do exactly, and how you are uncomfortable when the terms like Machine Learning and AI are thrown around as all-encompassing marketing keywords? How has a poetic and exploratory approach to computation helped you redefine your relationship with technology and tech companies?

5. How does computation relate to the sense of the self? How do we understand our bodies, emotions and ideas as affected by algorithms in the attention economy? How can we contrast this by trying to live a low-entropy life moving forward?
